Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Roto-Rooter is a full-service plumbing repair company. If you need shower repairs, Roto-Rooter works on shower plumbing systems, including shower faucets, shower mixing valves, shower water supply pipes, shower arms, shower heads, and even the components of a shower drainage system that may be contributing to a slow drain. Roto-Rooter plumbers can also fix plumbing problems related to combination bathtubs/showers and dedicated showers.

The cost of replacing a shower mixing valve or faucet cartridge varies by Roto-Rooter location. Additionally, Roto-Rooter, like all reputable plumbers, cannot effectively quote a cost estimate on a shower repair or any other plumbing problem without examining the plumbing and understanding the entirety of the situation. There could be other faulty parts contributing to the problem or the cartridge may be stuck in place due to corrosion. Surrounding parts may need to be replaced in tandem with the cartridge for it to work properly. For these reasons, Roto-Rooter will send a plumber to your home to assess the problem in person. The plumber will then quote you a cost estimate in writing. If you choose to have the work done, the plumber will get right to work fixing the problem.

Showers usually experience hair clogs. This is especially true if the people using the shower have long hair. Keep the shower drain free of hair by placing a hair trap over the shower drain. Clear hair out of the shower drain by using a zip stick or by bending a quarter inche hook into the end of a wire coat hanger. Push the hook into the drain as deep as it will go. Twist it around and slowly pull out the hair balls. This works best if the drain is wet. Repeat the process until no more hair is in the drain. Finally, treat your drain monthly with a safe, bio-based drain maintenance liquid like Roto-Rooter Pipe Shield.

Your Roto-Rooter plumber can install or replace some bathtub and shower units, but we do not do bathroom remodeling projects beyond water supply and drain connections and plumbing fixture installations. Feel free to contact your local Roto-Rooter office to discuss your project and we’ll gladly provide an accurate cost estimate.

Conserving water means using less water. Bathrooms are responsible for a great deal household water usage. Here are a few simple changes that can make a big difference on your water bill: 1. Take showers instead of baths. 2. Limit showers to 10 minutes. 3. Do not leave the water running when you’re brushing teeth or shaving at the sink. 4. Fix dripping sinks, tub/shower drips and running toilets. If you really want to step up your game on water conservation, convert your toilet to a dual-flush toilet using a tank rebuild kit from your hardware or home center.

A shower diverter is a switch that can be found on a bathtub faucet spout or attached to the faucet controls. Engaging the switch divers water from the bathtub spout to the shower head.

If the shower has water damage behind the shower walls or tile, the wall will need to be opened, and likely removed and replaced with new tile or a new waterproof shower enclosure. If there was a plumbing leak that caused the damage, it should be repaired by an experienced plumber. The wall cavity should be thoroughly dried and any rotten studs should be replaced. Mold and mildew should be mitigated before new tile or a new shower enclosure is installed.

It depends on what is wrong with your shower. Most individuals can easily replace an old shower head, but if there is something wrong with the shower faucets, the mixing valve, or water supply pipes, it is best to have a plumber make the repairs.

It depends on which parts of the shower are broken. Leaky shower heads and faucets can usually be repaired by an experienced plumber. Clogged shower drains are usually easy fixes too. Worn or damaged faucets, mixing valves, and shower heads can be replaced by your local Roto-Rooter plumber.

Most shower drain clogs are caused by a buildup of hair in the drain’s P-trap. In most cases, the hair is easily removed by inserting a “zip-stick” or plastic drain snake that can be purchased at most hardware stores. You can also bend a small hook to the end of a straightened wire coat hanger. Push the hook end into the drain, twist it around, then pull it back. Repeat the process until the entire hair clog is removed.

In a conventional bathtub/shower combo, the faucet spout is equipped with a diverter switch. When the diverter is engaged, most of the water flowing from the water supply pipe is diverted to the shower head, but some residual water also flows through the faucet spout

There are a number of reasons why your shower pressure is low. For instance, if water is being used elsewhere in the house (washing dishes, running a sprinkler, or a shower or bath is running in another bathroom). The house may also have low water pressure all around and could require an adjustment of the pressure reducer valve. An experienced plumber can pinpoint the cause if you’re unsure.

Shower heads are connected to a water supply pipe. When the shower faucet is turned on, water is directed under pressure to the shower head. Your shower head has many small slots or holes, which create a rain-like pattern to the water flow as it exits the head.
